22 - 24th November - A trip to West Yorkshire (with a detour into the North)

23rd November – A trip to Yorkshire

The idea of this weekends trip was to head to Yorkshire, mainly for some platforms, station photos and some units for mileage, the idea wasn’t to focus on the new stuff (LNER Azumas, TPE Novas, Northern CAFs) as they can wait for another time.  Due to LNER being late in releasing advances I was heading up via a strange route involving a Friday night in Macclesfield, the Saturday night was originally going to be in Bradford but I switched it over to Dewsbury as the prices were better (my usual stay at the Ibis Budget was quite expensive, I’m not paying £38 for the sound of racing cars all night long).

Anyhow the day began at the Macclesfield Travelodge, a hotel I’ve used a few times because it is ever so handy due to the location, and it was onto the first northbound service of the day, a service which starts at Macclesfield (after arriving ECS from Stoke, why it can’t run in service from Stoke I do not know, there must be no demand).  This morning this service was in the hands of 323225 as I took a seat in the front coach and waited for departure, in the meanwhile the first Stoke bound service had arrived from Manchester, and like previous times it featured some party goers in various states of undress, special mention to that lady in a sports bra, you must have been a bit chilly ;).

Early morning 323 based noise.

The train departed calling at all the stations heading towards Stockport, but as it kept on losing time I decided to bail at Stockport, crossing over to platform 3 to board 150106 & 150223 which ran nonstop to Piccadilly (overtaking the 323 at Heaton Chapel), this gave me an extra couple minutes for a fast walk to Victoria, arriving with a few minutes to spare for the Chester – Leeds train, hoping my luck would be in with a 195 as they have taken over some of the services on this route, and I was in luck as 195115 rolled in, sadly not required but better than a high density 150!  Due to congestion it was running a few minutes late, time it never gained back (which surprised me as I was expecting it to claw back some of the time due to being faster).  I bailed from this unit at Bramley as I needed a photograph, and due to the timetable the services from Bradford Interchange to Leeds are grouped together so it was only a booked 5 minute fester, sadly the unit from Huddersfield was running late so it was some time in the rain before 142092 bounced in to take me the final 4 miles to Leeds, where after grabbing breakfast from Sainsburys it was over to platform 1 to board the next Harrogate semi-fast.

The tunnel at Knaresborough.

A lightly loaded 170475 was on this semi-fast service, calling at Horsforth and Hornbeam Park only, I alighted at Hornbeam for a picture and a 20 minute wait (in the rain in a small shelter which soon filled up).  Next up was 170472 to take me to Knaresborough I station I needed for the southbound platform, and also a picture, hard to believe it has been 5 years since I last used this station when I was covering the track.  It is a nice station, but the grim weather meant I didn’t go out that far before returning to the station, getting a shock as the next Leeds wasn’t a 170, but a triple 153.  153373, 153332 & 153331 for the tiny leap to Starbeck and a 28 minute fester (time spent visiting the nearby Co-Op for lunch).  Next up was 170458 which took me to Leeds where after a brief scan of the platforms I returned to for the run back out to Headingley for a picture, normally a tight connection but due to a late running York train it meant the next Leeds train was running late, and it kept on getting later.  Eventually 170472 returned to take me to Leeds, where I had a short walk to board a York bound 158790 which was quite busy (due to a cancelation of a TPE service) which itself was delayed waiting for a driver, departure was around 15 minutes late with the driver making the unit work hard to regain some of that lost time for the run to Church Fenton.

Sprinters at Church Fenton

 A Hull – York service wasn’t of interest neither was a pacer from Sheffield.  I foolishly turned down a Blackpool bound service to wait for the Sheffield service (as it looked like on RTT it wasn’t the same unit back), but that service got delayed by around thirty minutes, eventually 142039 returned from York.  It was nice and peaceful in the waiting shelter at Church Fenton, listening to the rain and the roar of a passing TPE service, at least the delay meant a shorter wait at Swinton for low mileage 142071 to roll in from Adwick to take me to Sheffield, where my plan was to catch a Nottingham – Leeds service.  What I failed to notice is said service failed to track as the inbound service was cancelled, giving me a thirty minute wait at Sheffield before the next semi-fast Leeds service (turning down a busy 158 working a “Via Moorthorpe” stopper).  Although what annoyed me more was my last 2x 222s were together (222010 & 222103), however they were going back to the depot.  Had they been working a St Pancras service I would have changed my plans & purchased a day return to Chesterfield just to get both of them over the ten mile line.  (In case anybody was interested, both are on the 3 miles from Nottingham – Beeston leaps).

Pacer 071 at Sheffield.

The 158 from Lincoln arrived, and it was 158851 with collapsed seats, but still better than a high density 150, and nice to cover the line via Barnsley before darkness fell.  The unit got busy at Meadowhall with all the shoppers heading home (the previous service to Huddersfield got cancelled so there was a gap in Barnsley services).  I was on the unit all the way to Leeds where I made a tight connection to a Carlisle bound service, which was delayed waiting for a stopper from Sheffield to arrive to attach, it was the same 158 I turned down at Sheffield earlier on!  158796 & 158849 eventually departed 8 minutes late for the run to Bingley (photo stop), where I noticed a low mileage 333 on the Leeds bound, and noticed that on arrival at Leeds it would work one final trip to Skipton before heading to the sidings, so my plan got changed.  333014 rolled in from Leeds to take me to Keighley where I crossed over to board 321902 which was a very low mileage unit (Doncaster to Bentley!)

I bailed from the 321 at Shipley, not enough to push it over 10 miles, but I had a tight connection to reach platform 5 to board a Skipton bound service to take me around the curve to Saltaire, only when alighting I noticed it was low mileage 333006, so it was another change of plan time as I waited a few minutes before 333015 rolled in from Leeds to take me to Keighley, where I crossed over to the opposite platform to board 333005 for the run to Bradford Forster Square, crossing over to reboard 321902 for the run to Baildon.  I had noticed there had been some cancelled services and this unit would have been cleared for ten miles by Shipley had the next Bradford train been cancelled, but it was running so I decided to get this station done for a photograph (makes life easier for a future trip).  I was happy I got 321902 over the line as this trip would have been the last chance, and means I’m down to only 2 more 321s needed for ten miles, and one of those I know I won’t get (321448 which was last reported to be broken at Clacton depot).  333011 rolled in from Ilkley to take me back to Bradford Forster Square, where it was a cross platform onto 333006 to take me back to Leeds, and the last of the 333s for mileage needs.  Slightly happy I don’t have to keep an eye out for these nice units at Leeds in the future as they are not the easiest to ID due to the off-set unit numbers.

New CAF EMU meets old CAF EMU at Bradford Forster Square

At Leeds it was time to grab dinner from Boots before jumping onto 185120 for the trip to Dewsbury where I eventually found the pub I was staying in for the night, checked myself in and dropped off things from my bag before heading back to the station with a couple ideas in my head, eventually deciding to focus on the stations on this line I needed for photographs.  A short wait at Dewsbury before 185131 rolled in from Huddersfield, this was quite empty, and took me to Morley where I noticed the rain had resumed, more of a drizzle than anything.   A short wait before a Manchester Victoria bound service rolled in, 142055 & 150111 and I was shocked to find the pacer pretty much empty (the 150 looked busy).  Needless to say I picked the pacer as it was better than a high density 150!  I took these units to Mirfield where I changed platforms.  I was told the platform change at this interchange station was “hard”, but I don’t know what all the fuss is about, down some stairs from the Huddersfield/Brighouse bound platform, a short walk along a road, crossing over and up some stairs to the Leeds/Wakefield bound platform.  It isn’t in the same league as Guide Bridge for hard interchange stations, which is for sure!

185149 rolled in to take me back one stop to Ravensthorpe where I think I shocked the guard by being a passenger alighting at this quiet station, and I had a short wait before 185131 returned from Leeds to take me to Deighton, where I made a mistake as I didn’t need this station (note to self, look up list of requirements!), but never mind.  A few minutes later a late running 153328 & 153315 arrived from Castleford, a line which had been hit by a few cancellations, and a pause outside Huddersfield as the units went into platform 4.  My original idea was to board the 23:00 towards York, but that was running quite late so it was back onto 185131, making use of the plug sockets & WiFi as it departed first, called at Deighton before coming to a stop outside Mirfield as a pacer which had been wheeled out of the sidings to work the last Wakefield service “was having issues”.  25 minutes later, the 185 was back on the move, dropping me off at a busy Dewsbury station, where I had a short walk back to the pub to unwind before heading to sleep.

A wet Deighton

Overall a productive day, a few more platforms scored, some stations revisited for photographs, one more pacer cleared for ten miles (for it will be a miracle if I get 001 & 033), my last Northern “bin” and my last couple 333s.

24th November

The day began with a nice breakfast before checking out of the pub for a gentle walk to the station, but I wasn’t going to be catching a train, but a rail replacement bus.  Yes when booking I failed to carry out research and ended up with the line being closed until around half nine, on the other hand it allows me to head to Leeds via a different route than normally.  The 08:05 Leeds bus was running around 10 minutes late and rolled in (Bus UUI 4798) to take the awaiting crowd to outside Leeds station.  After a quick scan of the platforms highlighted nothing much of interest, I waited for the Doncaster service hoping it would be a required 331.

Lady luck must have been looking the other direction as it was dud 331106, the one I had a couple months ago for my first experience, ah well.  I took this 331 for the short run to Sandal & Agbrigg returning to Leeds on 144019 which was randomly working Leeds – Doncaster stoppers this morning, Northern must be short on EMUs (shame they sent a couple away for storage at Newcastle).  I took this pacer to Leeds, remaining on board for the next trip to Outwood for a short linear hop before the next Sheffield stopper rolled in, formed of 158870 for the run to Fitzwilliam.  A short fester here at Fitzwillaim (nothing much of note around the station), before a busy 158910 rolled in from Sheffield to take me back to Leeds once more, I must have failed to notice that these services are now hourly on Sundays, as they used to be 2 hourly, although not all of them call at Outwood/Sandal.

Luxury on the Sheffield stopping service!

I had some unfinished business with the Leeds – Huddersfield TPE stoppers, so it was a short connection to board 185131 (again!) to take me a few stops to Batley, returning to Leeds once again on 185114.  I had noticed the previous week there was a Newcastle – Liverpool service which was a 802 and that was the next service due into Leeds, so I decided to wait on platform 16 as winner 802210 rolled in, my first TPE 802 in the colours and they do look the business.  And so for the first time (but highly likely not the last) it was a Huddersfield leap, returning to Leeds yet again on a busy Scarborough bound 185135.  I got a seat in the ballroom which was an extra bonus, at Leeds I had around 15 minutes to grab something to eat from Boots before my booked train to Manchester.

I wonder what Felix things of all these new shiny trains passing her station?

When I returned to the platform, that train was showing as “delayed”, it hadn’t reported on RTT since the Hambleton junctions area, a check on the Journey Check highlighted there had been a points failure, so I decided to board the next Manchester Airport bound service, no announcements from the platform staff regarding the issues which was a bit of a poor show.  Thankfully I got an unreserved seat on 185111 for the trip to Manchester Piccadilly, going via Manchester Victoria which meant a bit of new track coverage for TPE with the section between Victoria & Stalybridge.  At Piccadilly I had some spare time before boarding 185121 to take me to Stockport to await a short formed voyager.

Yes it was another trip to Basingstoke using multiple split tickets on XC, and no I didn’t think of checking the price from Leeds, but £22 for Manchester – Basingstoke on a Sunday afternoon isn’t to be turned down.  This service was meant to be a pair of voyagers, but once again it was short formed, thankfully I was smart enough to put myself in coach F, which wasn’t really that bad on departure from Stockport, a few empty seats which remained until Stafford.  221120 was doing the honours, as usual it got busy at New Street, but this time didn’t really empty out until Reading, but got busy again with Basingstoke goers.  I was glad to alight at Basingstoke, for some fresh air, as I headed to KFC for some food (didn’t fancy a pizza as there was no decent promotions on).  I sat on the bench at Basingstoke, ate the food and used the WiFi to catch up on stuff before 159002 rolled in to take me to Andover (featuring a good fight with a couple drunks decided someone “looked at them”).

Voyager at Basingstoke

The day started with a bus, and ended with a rail replacement bus.  Passengers for Salisbury were told to board a double decker service bus, and the two passengers for Grateley were told to board a nice coach (JL09 RSL) for the trip back to Grateley, the driver going a very weird route compared to usual, and I had my usual walk home (picking up a couple bits of rubbish along the way, as it bugs me seeing rubbish on the side of the road).

Overall a productive weekend, certainly the next time I’m in West Yorkshire I can focus on getting those remaining stations I need for photographs, hopefully this time getting the connection from Huddersfield platform 4 to the Sheffield line (I was aiming for it on the Saturday but it got cancelled)

22nd November – The Road to Macclesfield

I decided to have a short session on South Eastern before my booked train to Macclesfield, mainly as that area is the largest I need for units for mileage needs.  The day began with the 14:59 from Grateley to Waterloo with 158888 & 159012 doing the honours, it was held at Andover for around 12 minutes due to signalling issues (waiting for a freight train to clear a long section in front), at Waterloo it was a gentle walk over to Waterloo East and I will summarize the moves

Waterloo East -> London Bridge, 375612, 375305 & 375613 (last of the 375/6s)
London Bridge -> Lewisham, 465235 & 465020
Lewisham -> Eltham, 465237 & 465050
Eltham -> Abbey Wood, 465928 & 465017 (very low mileage 465/9, sat on the chord before Slade Green for ten minutes which got boring quickly!)
Abbey Wood -> Bexley, 376020 & 376031 (also managed to grab a photograph of Crayford when the units sat there for 5 minutes changing headcode before heading to London)
Bexley –> London Bridge, 465920, 466036 & 465905 (a very rare triple low mileage set)
London Bridge -> Hither Green, 466010, 465192 & 465908 (mileage boosting move for 192)
Hither Green -> Charing Cross, 466042, 465177 & 465028
Charing Cross -> London Bridge, 465902, 466043 & 465930
London Bridge -> St Pancras: 700141 (breaking my run of low mileage units)

375s passing Hither Green

I walked across to Euston, and boarded the 21:00 to Manchester, for it will be an end of an era for the last time I will be departing Euston on a Virgin Trains service.  390002 was going the honours and all was going well (other than a grumpy Milton Keynes person who can’t read the screens saying “Reserved” until Stone when the unit lost around 8 minutes due to a late running 350, and hence keeping up my poor record with this service of it always being late, maybe it will be 10th time lucky in the new year!  On arrival at Macclesfield, it was a short walk across the road to check myself into the Travelodge, and a nice shower before heading to the land of Inverkip.

Naked Pendo!

Overall a productive evening in South Eastern land, 9 units pushed over ten miles outright, with 3 more networkers given boosts to mileages.

15th - 17th November - A trip to the North East

16th November – A trip to the North East

I wanted a nice weekend away in Newcastle area, mainly to get the northbound platform at Widdrington, but also to see if I could get anything needed for mileage.  Sadly the Heaton based pacer I needed wasn’t out to play, my last LNER powercar was on a Newcastle – Inverness service (first stop Berwick, starting at Newcastle due to engineering works further south), but I had good news for my last 185.

Due to the engineering works, advances for the East Coast were held back from being released so I decided to think outside the box, ending up on the lowland sleeper to Carlisle for a slow trip across the Tyne Valley to reach Newcastle, and on the Sunday managed to do a multi-split on XC to get to Reading for just over £32, featuring a nice HST.  Anyhow the day begins on the lowland sleeper being hauled by winner 92028 and a few minutes early arrival at Carlisle where only myself and a business gentleman alighted (he was in a suit so I suspect someone who is a regular).  I had around 40 minutes to kill before the first Newcastle service of the day, so I had a brief walk around a dead quiet Carlisle, always strange walking around places in the early hours where it’s peaceful.

The lowlander sleeper departs Carlisle

Anyhow, back to the station and it was onto 156481 for the long trip towards Newcastle, calling at all the stations, every single one, slow wasn’t the word, but eventually Newcastle was reached, arriving a minute or so early allowing me to make a tight connection onto a Reading bound 220001 for the run to Darlington where I exited the station to head to a nearby Sainsburys Local in the hope of scoring a bacon sandwich, but came away empty handed as the shelves were doing a good impression of the shelves at Euston Sainsburys in being empty.  Back to the station and after a northbound voyager departed it was a walk to the annex platform 4a to board 156472 & an empty 158907 for the run to Newcastle.  Doing this route on a Northern service felt so strange, and is also the first time in many years I’ve called at Chester Le Street.  Once at Newcastle I sourced breakfast before heading to board a Manchester bound 185103 & 185101 as far as Durham (for a photograph) followed by a busy dud 800102, a student type wasn’t very happy that I asked her to move her bag from the seat to allow me to sit down, bless her.

I was back at Darlington, making my way over to the bays for the next Saltburn service, where I got a phone call from the hotel I was staying at, saying that due to failing a fire inspection they couldn’t honour my booking, and suggested a place in Hebburn which had rooms available.  Needless to say when I boarded 142018 for the trip towards Middlesbrough I was on my phone on the booking dot com website looking at options, expecting the worse but was surprised at the number of options available for £35, with my eyes catching hold of a £19 room in a hotel in Whitley Bay, certainly looked close to the metro station so that is where I booked up.  I was expecting either to pay £60+ for a room or get a dorm somewhere, so issue solved.

No trip report to Northern land is complete without the traditional picture of a pacer

Back on the pacer, as it bounced its way to Middlesbrough, where I alighted, crossing over to the opposite platform to wait for the next Manchester train to roll in, a little victory sound as 185108 rolled in, which clears my 185s for ten mileages, however I needed to stay on this very busy service to Northallerton for it to be cleared for ten miles.  Nothing to note at Northallerton other than two grumpy cyclists being angry that they couldn’t board due to the overcrowding (I think there was something happening in York).  I crossed over to the opposite platform to board winner 802203 for the run back to Newcastle, certainly picked up a nice bit of speed running on the overhead wires.

The grey bullet of 802203 rests at Newcastle

My eyes picked up on a low mileage 156491 on the next Carlisle service, which I decided to take to Hexham for the Newcastle bound platform, and also for a photograph, returning to Prudhoe on 156472 and then back to Newcastle on 158817 (still feels odd having 158s floating around this area).  Back at Newcastle, it was time to head towards Whitley Bay to check in as the opening hours were a bit short (closes at 7pm on the website), and as the first train was a Coast bound service (4027/4090) I decided to stay on board all the way to Whitley Bay, where I located the hotel, checked in and dropped some bits from my bag before heading back to the Metro station with 4058/4012 taken to Monument, where it was a short connection onto 4037/4031 (which I saw passing around Cullercoats, so it doesn’t matter which way round you go), which took me to the new station at South Shields.

The new station at South Shields

Sadly no time to hang around, as it was back on the same pair for the run back to Central Station, where it was a short connection to 156444 for the run to Blaydon.  This connection was a bit dodgy as it was a +6 and this 156 departed 4 minutes late, but thankfully the next Newcastle bound service was also running a few minutes late, so it allowed me to grab my photograph of this semi-awkward station.  156491 was back to take me to Dunston for another photograph, where it was a short fester before 156472 rolled in on the Chathill service.  It got busy at Newcastle and I was very surprised how busy it was after Morpeth, must have been around 20 other passengers on board.  No takers for Pegswood that I noticed, and only I & one regular passenger alighted at Widdrington.  A station I feel has potential if it had a decent service level, as like Pegswood it has a lot of houses nearby.  Clearly Northern think it also has potential as they have installed a TVM here...

...Yes a TVM at a station served by 3 trains a day, maybe a rival for Doleham for least used TVM, although the Promise to pay option wasn’t available.  Sadly the little shelter has been removed and it appears a future shelter will be installed at some point, so 85 minutes with no seat, in light drizzle.  After visiting the nearby Co-Op, I took shelter in a little bus shelter, watching as the ECS at Chathill was running late, as everything in that area was delayed I can only assume there was some signal issues, maybe around one of the level crossings.  Anyhow 156472 eventually returned running around 15 minutes late, two other passengers were on board, and I took it all the way to Newcastle, narrowly missing a train towards Sunderland.  So as a time wasting move, I decided to board a busy Doncaster bound LNER service (82205 leading 91107, the 5th time I’ve had that 91 for pushing but I’ve never had it for pulling).  At Darlington, it was a short wait but sadly the gamble didn’t work as it was dud 800113 for the run back to Newcastle.

Some money is being spent at Widdrington for the 3 trains a day

It was time to say farewell to the big trains and head to the Metro station, where the next train showing was to the Airport with a “The Coast” train in 16 minutes, so it was a leap to Monument on 4081/4089, just missing a Coast train from the high level platform, so it was back to the low level platform with 4090/4027 taken back to a very busy Central Station, but a short wait before 4059 rolled in, I managed to get a seat near the front for the run back towards Whitley Bay, where disaster struck when I was an absolute idiot and left my phone on the train.  What I imagine happened was I got my phone out of my pocket in order to make a note of the rear set (4062), but got distracted attempting to release the hotel keys from my bag (I’ve got a little clip think which I use to hook keys on) but as this is a new bag the clip is stiff and I ran out of time, hopping off without doing my usual “pocket” check.  On the platform I did my pocket check hunting for the phone, only to realise I must have left it on board.

Needless to say, this got me quick angry with myself for being such an idiot (before getting a bit depressed) and also worried.  Thankfully my pictures had backed up with the runs on the LNER earlier so al I lost were the original high resolution pictures.  In a bit of a panic I hopped on the next service to Cullercoats (4044/4049) and sat on the seat waiting for the train to return, but when it did as expected there was nothing around.  Back to Whitley Bay and a slow walk to the hotel, where I spent the next thirty minutes sending a couple emails, firstly to my provider to put a stop to the Sim and also to Nexus to report the lost property.  An awful end of the day, but I have only myself to blame, I lost focus, an expensive mistake.  (Thankfully it is only a Motorola Moto G, so £125 to replace it with one from Amazon, so it could have been worse).

As for the hotel, it was very nice, especially for £19 for a same day booking, certainly one I would consider using again the next time I’m in Newcastle next year on Azuma hunting.

17th November – Back home

As mentioned at the station, due to a delay with LNER releasing their fares I decided to go back south on XC, the original idea for this morning was to score South Shields (as my original hotel was in that area), but it was a late start as I walked to Whitley Bay Metro station (in the rain) to catch 4088/4074 for the run to Central Station (via Monkseaton), where I made use of some free WiFi from a nearby hotel to start researching options for new devices.  I got distracted with the arrival of an East Midlands Railways HST bound for Edinburgh, and using my tablet camera got a picture as it looked a bit out of place.

Wasn't expecting to see this at Newcastle this morning!

After that HST departed, I headed over to platform 4 to wait for the Plymouth bound HST, with 43207 leading 43285.  I took my reserved seat, as the guard came round putting manual labels as the electronic displays had failed to work, and carried on my research for the speedy run south, before heading towards Leeds (which I think is the first time I’ve had a HST from York to Leeds), where the train got very busy until Wakefield & Sheffield, where it was a bit of a slow run towards Derby due to speed restrictions caused by flooding.  Thankfully we overtook a pair of Cardiff bound 170s outside Derby as due to my many splits I was on those pair of units from Burton on Trent.

170522 & 170112 rolled in at Burton to take me to New Street, where I changed trains to a very busy Reading bound 220014, busy with passengers for Birmingham International & Coventry, how I miss doing this train on a Saturday where it goes via Solihull and tends to be a lot quieter.  Due to the usual congestion it was a bit of a crawl behind a 350 stopper so we lost around 15 minutes by the time the voyager reached Leamington.  It regained some time towards Oxford (lots of flooding), but lost time due to being behind a Paddington bound service (which got looped at Didcot).  At Reading, I decided to head to Basingstoke on 165106, heading towards Andover on 159101, 159019 & 159014 because there is more options for light food at Andover (compared to Basingstoke which doesn’t really have any convenience stores close by, other than a little overpriced Londis).  After picking up dinner from a Co-Op, it was back to the station before 159011 & 159015 took me for the final 6 miles back to Grateley.

A voyager at Reading, nothing unusual here folks!

A relaxing little walk back home, reflecting on a good day ruined by me being an idiot but hey ho.

15th November – The road to the Sleeper

Due to a work commitment on the Thursday night, I finished early on the Friday allowing me to head to London, mainly to meet up with my good friend Jules who had returned from Japan.  Going via Reading and scoring 345051 before I met up for a good catch up, before some Piccadilly line moves, saving farewell at Victoria, the next few hours for me was on South Eastern where I managed to get 3 more 375s above 10 miles, another 377/5, plus a 465/9 & 466, with a mileage boost to another 465 & a 700.

The LU Rail Adhesion Train at Ealing Broadway

All in all a productive few hours, as I made my way to Euston to take my seat behind winner 92028 for the trip to Carlisle.

10th November – A 802 on Tour (plus summarys for 8th & 9th)

10th November – A 802 on Tour

Back in March, there was a block on the line between Tiverton & Taunton for tunnel improvements, with most of the work done in that block, but there was another block in November so the work could be finished.  I was going to do the little trip back in March but decided against it and headed somewhere else, so I decided to do the trip this weekend, mainly to sample something other than a Sprinter on the section of line from Yeovil Junction to Exeter.  After looking into fares I ended up booking advances from Reading to Exeter (and vice versa).

I will admit since the May timetable change, getting to Reading early on a Sunday morning is a lot easier, no more hanging around Basingstoke for 45 minutes due to poor connections between trains from Salisbury to the Reading shuttles, so it was a nice drive to Andover before boarding 159022 on the first Salisbury – Reading service, non-stop to Basingstoke and non-stop to Reading, even though I’ve done it a few times on SWR units it still feels strange doing the line to Reading on a sprinter.  At Reading I had time to head to a nearby shop for some supplies before heading back to the station for the 09:30 train to Plymouth.

159022 hiding in plain sight at Reading

This train was formed of 10 coaches, and I was very lucky as winner 802020 rolled in with 802018 behind, this unit escaped me on Friday evening due to a set swap so nice to craw it back, leaving me with just one more 802/0 to go to clear the GWR IETs (no more festering around Reading!).  I took my seat in coach C for the relaxing trip towards Westbury, calling at Newbury, a bit of a farce outside Castle Cary caused by a late running engineers train blocking the platform so the service lost time before getting onto the platform where passengers for Taunton & Tiverton were told to alight to change for a bus.  The lost time was regained as it was due to sit at Yeovil Pen Mill for 20 minutes awaiting the next Paddington service to clear the single track, another brief pause at Yeovil Junction before it was full steam ahead to Exeter St Davids, clearing a few stations for passing along the way.

Arrival into Exeter St Davids was on time, so it was a quick trip to Exeter Central on 143621 & 143620, returning to St Davids mainly so I could ID what unit was on the next Penzance service (as I need most of the reformed 2 coach 158s, but it was a dud 802/0), so it was onto the original plan of waiting for 150261 to arrive from Exmouth to take me to Teignmouth for a station photograph (and also for a walk to the seafront for a seaside picture).

Sadly the ice cream parlour was closed so no ice-cream by the seaside

 Back at the station it was a short wait before 150233 &150234 rolled in from Exmouth to take me to Torquay, which was another station photograph, and another picture of the sea front (I can see why this area is popular in the summer time).  I returned on the same pair of units one stop up the line to Torre (another station picture needed), for a short wait before 143617 & 143618 bounced in to take me to Paignton.  Next year I will try and do the steam railway beyond, but for now it was a case of returning on the same pair of pacers to Newton Abbot where I had a little walk to the town centre for some supplies for dinner later on.

Back at Newton Abbot it was a short wait for my booked train back to Reading, the screens lied about the formation so it was a bit swap of passengers when 802101 rolled in, a slight delay caused by a smoke alarm going off in one of the toilets.  I had to wait to Exeter St Davids to claim my seat as it was reserved from Plymouth to Exeter (but meant I could sit on the sea side of the train for the Dawlish coast).  A short delay at Exeter when the train reversed but again due to dwell time along the way it regained right time after Axminster, afterwards is where things went wrong as due to a points failure around Westbury the train couldn’t go via Westbury and so went via Frome for road replacement transport (although does mean I got the Frome loop & Westbury avoider for IET coverage!).  Bit of a farce at Frome due to the computer saying “no” to releasing the doors as it wasn’t a booked stop (and hence got confused), eventually the train departed around 20 minutes late, pausing at Pewsey and Newbury.

Pacers at Paignton

Due to a smoke alarm going off in the toilet again, the AC went into failsafe mode and cut off, so the driver was going to attempt to restart the train to get the AC working again, so for a minute it all went dark inside.  The unit from Bedwyn looped us at Newbury (and GWR were quick to put on an additional Newbury Racecourse – Newbury service for any Newbury passengers from Bedwyn), eventually the train got going again but the damage had been done as it rolled into Reading around 40 minutes late (hello delay repay).

Thankfully the XC to Bournemouth was running late so it was the next available train to Basingstoke, however I knew it was going to be bad due to the crowding on the platform, made worse as 220034 rolled in with one coach locked out of use due to faulty doors.  I decided to head to first class where I managed to get a seat before it got swamped out with passengers (oh dear the Train Manager never got round to collect my weekend first payment).  It regained enough time to give me a 5 minute connection at Basingstoke for 159022 back to Andover, where I had a nice drive home.

Friday & Saturday bits

On the Friday was a relaxing evening in London, where I cleared 345052 outright, plus got 3 out of my 5 remaining Heathrow Express units over the 5 mile line, they are not the easiest to do due to the timetable within the tunnels at Heathrow.  I nearly got bowled out with a delay into Basingstoke due to a late running 166 being held outside Reading for a late running voyager, but somehow pulled off a minute connection from platform 5 to platform 2 to avoid an hour and a bit delay home

It won't be the same when the 332s are replaced by 387s

On the Saturday it was a very rare late start, as I decided my body needed sleep, so once I woke up I decided on a little trip to Bedwyn for some station photographs, grabbing Bramley, Theale with an hour wait in the rain at Kintbury (nice shelter with a decent bench) before visiting Bedwyn where I was foolish enough to go for a walk, eventually locating the footpath leading to the turnback siding for an unusual picture of a 800.

A 800 in the turnback siding at Bedwyn, rain not included

I returned back to Reading for a bit of idea shopping, returning to a busy Basingstoke for some food before heading back home, where a nice warm shower and lazy night in front of the fire awaited.
