26th August – Another Bank Holiday Monday Southern Daysave

Like with the late bank holiday Monday in May, I decided to do a Southern Daysave, the main was to get some more of the 313s for mileage, plus a couple platforms.  It was a similar plan as last trip, with IDing the units on the Littlehampton/Bognor/Portsmouth circuit, the Worthing units, the Seaford/Lewes 5 and the Hove shuttle.  I had 6 to get for 10 miles, so set myself a target of 5, including any 377s I come across.


It was a nice early morning drive to Romsey, my car happy she saw some use after a week of rest, parking in the library carpark and watching to the station, buying my day return to Southampton from the friendly (and bored looking) ticket office gentleman, and waited as 166219 rolled in on a Southampton terminating service.  No surprise that the windows were all wide open as the AC on 166s is rubbish when it gets warm (and today promised to be a hot day).  I had a short connection at Southampton Central, but it was the same platform face, just further up from 2b (or not 2b) to 2a where 377440 was working a Victoria service which took me to Chichester in order to ID a Portsmouth bound service (313203 I believe).

Next up was a busy Brighton bound 377143 and I was glad to alight at Ford for a short fester before 377138 & 377402 took me one stop towards Horsham to the beautiful Arundel station, returning to Barnham on 377150 & 377154, spotting a 313 on the Littlehampton bound being low mileage.  A short wait before low mileage 313206 rolled up from Littlehampton on the next Bognor Regis service which I had to take both ways to get it over ten miles, returning to Bognor a few minutes later on 377439 & 377443 where due to late running was going from platform 2 to score the microgrice connection (although easy to do on Sundays I believe).  Another brief return at Bognor before returning to Barnham and having a fast walk via the subway to jump on the Portsmouth & Southsea bound 313219.

It would have been cleared by Chichester, but I stayed on to Bosham to intercept the 4th unit, which was 313204 and not really of interest.  Neither was the following London 377, so I popped out of the station to a nearby Tesco for something to eat before returning for the next Brighton service.  377422 took me to Shoreham by Sea, passing a low mileage 377/1 on a Bognor service (so I made a note to look up its future moves).  The reason to bail at Shoreham was simply to ID a West Worthing service (having passed one of the three in the turnback siding), nothing of interest, so it was onwards to Hove on 377108, allowing me to ID the third unit on the Worthing Metro services (again, nothing of interest), but the unit on the Hove shuttles was required, and a quick calculation worked out I needed to do 3 shuttles to get it over ten miles, so it was onwards to Brighton on 313220, a quick chance to ID one of the Seaford units and anything else Southern in the station (ignoring the Gatwick Express units as I don’t need any, and the 700s as I didn’t have a valid ticket).

Back to Hove on 313220 for another quick look at a couple other units, spotting a low mileage 377/4 heading towards Littlehampton as I departed back towards Brighton, being able to tick 313220 off for mileage, with a gentle walk over to platform 8 where an ultra low mileage 313 was sat (another low mileage 313 was sitting in a siding near the station so I knew I wasn’t getting that one today, leaving just “Big Blue” (201) to see if it was out and about.  On the way to Lewes on 313208 I did a rough plan using RTT, basically I needed to stay on this unit beyond Lewes and after IDing the other units as not being blue, I decided to remain on 208 all the way to Seaford, and after a quick picture returned to Lewes.  I do like this line as it gives the units a chance to gain some speed, plus has beautiful views.

At Lewes, I crossed over to platform 2 to board a Victoria bound 377426 & 377449 which ran non-stop to Wivelsfield (first time I believe I have passed Plumpton), and paused at Haywards Heath for a unit from Littlehampton to join on the rear.  I was happy because it was low mileage 377436 (which clears the sub-class) which I saw earlier at Hove.  The next stop for this service was Gatwick Airport which is where I alighted, to fight through the crowds boarding with suitcases, to await the next Portsmouth bound service, which was formed of 377447. 377112 & 377414, noting that the AC in 377112 was broken (it was quite warm when I walked through).  377447 detached from the other two units and continued fast to Barnham after Horsham (first time doing this line for a while, I always forget how pretty it is).

A short connection at Barnham as I waited for the next service from Bognor which as expected was formed of low mileage 377119, the run to Ford would leave it close to ten, so it was back to Arundel to push it over that line.  A short connection at Arundel (made longer due to a delay) with 377402 & 377138 taken to Ford, before 377110 rolled in to take me to Southampton Central, the last Southern service of the trip.  I had a short fester at Southampton before 158958 rolled in from Brighton which took me the final 8 miles to Romsey, with a nice drive back home.

Overall, my target was beaten with 6 units for mileage, leaving just the 2 313s, plus 9 of the Southern 377s.  A couple platforms were scored as well as an unusual microgricing at Barnham.  Overall it was a beautiful day, hence why I finished it earlier as I didn’t want to be hanging around Brighton when everybody started to head home, also it was the end of my summer holiday with work resuming on the Tuesday.

28th August – A mini trip to Pewsey

Back a few years ago I did “Bedwyn rounders” to pass the time, basically Grateley – Bedwyn is valid via Westbury as it is the shortest route, but due to the tiny number of services which call at Bedwyn from the Westbury direction, the most common route is via Reading.  However during the evening peak there are some services which call at Bedwyn on route to Westbury, and since the May timetable change introduced a Bristol – Waterloo service which calls at Grateley around 9pm, it makes it easier to do the round trip, and as a side bonus both services call at Pewsey which would allow me to grab a picture (as the only previous time I have visited this station was when it was dark).

I finished work early on the Wednesday and decided to head out, with 159005 & 159105 working the 16:59 service from Grateley, which took me to Basingstoke, connecting to a busy 165112 where I sat in the declassified first class section (which surprisingly was quite empty) for the run to Reading, where I had some time to kill before the Frome stopper, 800002 was working a Newbury stopping service and a 802/1 was working a Penzance service.  Due to wire HopHHopefffdamage around Didcot, there was some additional Turbos working Oxford stoppers plus additional calls being made on some Bristol bound services due to the lack of EMUs.  My time at Reading was cut short with the appearance of 800313 which took me to Pewsey, emptying out along the way (calls at the same stations the Bedwyn services do, so a few short platform announcements).

A few pictures of a wet Pewsey with a late running service from Newquay also calling, but my time here wasn’t for long, because for some reason Pewsey gets two services inside 10 minutes, so it was onwards to Westbury on an Exeter bound 802111.  I noted a Portsmouth bound service being a 158+150 combo with the 150 detaching at Westbury to work back to Bristol, with a 159 arriving from Waterloo (which runs ECS back to the depot), which means for a while there is only one platform available, not the best when a Cardiff bound 158 was running late.  Eventually that departed and 159009 rolled in from Bristol to take me back to Grateley, darkness had fallen but I was glad I could get out and sample an IET from Newbury to Westbury.  A good day trip for just over £10.

24th August – Oxfordshire & North Downs

Due to the various engineering works happening around the network due to it being a bank holiday weekend, I decided to stay local to knock out some required platforms, the idea was for it to be a nice early night (for being on the rails with some long days had started to catch up with me).  For only the second ever time I was using an Oxfordshire Day Ranger, plus some day returns towards Redhill.

It was a beautiful sunrise when I walked to the station for the 05:59 service formed of 159106 for the ~ 25 mile trip to Basingstoke, where my original plan to head to Reading on the GWR service was binned as that unit was cancelled, so I made use of the delay to purchase my rover from the ticket office at Basingstoke.  Back on the platform it was a short wait before boarding 220008 for the run to Reading, for a brief fester before 802113 took me to Oxford where it terminated, spotting a required 802/0 on the next Oxford – Paddington service was a bit annoying as once that one arrived at Paddington it disappeared to the depot (either not to appear for the rest of the day or to appear later on another service).

A short fester in the sunshine, noting that the Chiltern services were 5 coach Turbos [although at the time it didn’t see unusual as I know some morning services are run with 165s], before I boarded a very quiet 165105 for the run to Kings Sutton where I met up with the resident revenue protection cat, although not that good at checking tickets but very friendly, and kept me company for the 20 minutes before 165014 & 165002 rolled in on a Banbury terminator, which I believe is the first time I have gone into platform 4 from the south.

Back to Oxford on a Southampton bound 220002, before a short wait for 165121 to arrive with the next Didcot Parkway shuttle to take me to Appleford.  This station gets a 2 hourly service on Saturdays (same with Culham), and it doesn’t really serve anywhere, so I was surprised when there was a good half dozen boarding the train both ways (nobody else alighted).  15 or so minutes at Appleford before 165121 returned from Didcot to take me back to Oxford where as a time wasting move I took 165007 & 165030 out to Oxford Parkway, returning to Oxford with a tight connection on 165039 & 165017, so what I noticed earlier seemed to be happening with all the Marylebone – Oxford services being formed of 5 coach 165s rather than the more usual 168s.

A busy 802007 took me to Reading, where I had time to grab lunch before boarding a busy 165116 (with failed Air cooling) on a stopper to Ash, a few minutes at Ash before 450107 rolled in to take me to Guildford, before 165107 appeared on the next Gatwick Airport service to take me to Reigate.  I needed to collect my Southern Daysave ticket from the TVM so I had planned to head to Redhill on the next Southern service and head back towards North Camp on 165107, but for whatever reason 165116 was delayed in departing Redhill, so after crossing over the level crossing, picking my daysave for Monday up, I reboarded 165116 for the run to North Camp.  I noted the sign at Reigate could do with some TLC and that Network South East lives on!

Earlier in the month when I was on the Alton line, I failed in my attempt to grab the northbound platform at Ash Vale due to the Ascot train being cancelled due to a train falling, so this meant a rejig of my plan, and after a leisurely walk in the sunshine (via Tesco for something cold), it was a short fester at Ash Vale station for 450565 to take me to Ascot, along a line I haven’t done for a few years and can remember when it was operated with pairs of 456s.  The AC on the 450 felt so nice after the heat, and I didn’t have too long to wait at Ascot for a Reading bound 458518 & 458534 to take me to Reading.

I had one last station to revisit today, and that was Pangbourne, so it was over to the high numbered platforms at Reading for a surprise with 165110 & 165102 rolling back the years and working a Didcot stopper, I knew there was a pair of turbos out during the week to cover for the 387s which have gone to Heathrow Express, but I was surprised it happened on a Satuday.  Never the less it was a short run to Pangbourne, spotting a lovely old Rolls Royce in the car park, before 387174 & 3871725 took me back to Reading.  In all fairness I should have now called it a day and head home, but there was some unfinished business with Chiltern as I had spotted a low mileage 165 floating around earlier in the day.

And so after a brief fester at Reading, keeping my eyes open for any required 802s, it was onto 800005 to Oxford, with 165027/165034 taken to Oxford Parkway, returning to Oxford with 165033/165010 for a brief turnaround before returning back to Oxford Parkway before low mileage 165031 & 165019 appeared to take me back to Oxford, where it was straight onto 800317 from the Cotswolds Line to take me to Reading, 165135 (with some feral kids playing loud music & kicking the seats) back to Basingstoke and finally 159106 back home to Grateley.

Overall it was a nice relaxing day in Oxfordshire with detours to Surrey, but I needed a lazy day on the Sunday, just to recover.  Getting those 2 Chiltern Turbos were a bonus, and that takes me down to only needing 3 of them, and as they have a habit of not running within the London Zones [fast to Gerrards Cross etc] they can be hard to track down.  Today was getting some little oddities out of the way for my random quest for random platforms.

23rd August – A West Midlands Day Ranger Trip


23rd August – A West Midlands Day Ranger

Like with the Norwich trip from yesterday, over the last few months I have made a small list of things I want to do, although a few of the ones in the Midlands have been reduced over time there was still a few on the list which required a West Midlands Day Ranger, plus some stations to revisit for random platforms.  Also being on a West Midlands Day Ranger allowed me to look for my last few XC 170s I need for mileage (all were 2-coach units and all previously only had on Beeston – Nottingham leaps).

It was another walk to Grateley for the 08:59 service, with 159005 & 159021 taken to Basingstoke for a short wait before 220001 rolled in to take me to Banbury; I soon located an empty seat which was reserved from Winchester to Wolverhampton which would do me fine on what was a very busy service after Oxford.  One advantage XC has over Virgin is that XC will show seats are reserved from D to H, rather than being “reserved”, so if someone like me boards at station E and is heading to station G and hasn’t got a reservation and sees a seat reserved from D to H it is safe enough to sit in without the risk that the seat will have only been reserved to station F and is reserved again from F to H and you get kicked out, if that makes any sort of sense!.

I soon alighted at Banbury, popped out of the station to buy my West Midlands Day Ranger from the ticket office (I did try buy it from the guard on the XC couldn’t be bothered looking it up), before returning for what always previously was a 68 hauled set, but instead it was 168003 which took me to Warwick Parkway, returning to Leamington Spa on a very busy 168323 (yes a 2 coach unit on a Birmingham – London service…).  The next Nuneaton service was formed of 172007 for my first trip on a refurbished 172/0 since they left London Overground.  They seemed to be nice inside, with new carpets, seat covers, new toilet etc. Certainly a big change from the previous 153 which worked these previously split up services (Leamington – Coventry, Coventry – Nuneaton), both in terms of interior comforts and speed.

Nuneaton was soon reached and I decided to randomly head over to platform 6 to ID an inbound Cross Country service as a time wasting move before the next Crewe bound 350s to visit Atherstone, but that plan changed as low mileage 170116 rolled up, a trip to Coleshill Parkway was in order, returning to Nuneaton on 170111, but once again my planned trip to Atherstone was put on the back-burner as the next Euston service was 350118 leading low mileage 350119 and it was rude to turn it down with the run to Rugby, where I made a connection onto 390039 which sat at the station for a while, a track fault ahead meant trains had to run at a reduced speed so Birmingham was reached around 15 minutes down.  I had some spare time and noticed a low mileage 323201 rolling in on a Four Oaks terminator, the run to Wylde Green was enough to push it over ten miles and gave a reasonable connection to a southbound service, formed of 323207 to take me to Aston, stepping back onto 350122 from Walsall for the final leg to New Street.

A brief look around the station found nothing of interest so with a rough plan in mind, it was on a low mileage 323243  & 323214 to Longbridge (just being enough to push it over 10 miles), noting my last West Midlands 323 for mileage heading northbound during my fester, so my plan was changed again, but first 323209 took me non-stop to Bromsgrove, returning on the same unit to take me to Barnt Green to tick off that platform and a slow walk over to platform 4 to await 323208 for the run to Redditch, changing ends on a busy service back to New Street.  I wasn’t expecting to get my last trio of 323s for mileage, but nice in a way as I don’t have to keep my eyes peeled for them in the future (only one more example in the Northern fleet for the class).

Thanks to my good friend Jules giving me info that my final West Midlands 170 was working Snow Hill lines services, after arriving in a slowly collapsing New Street, I had a quick walk across to Moor Street jumping on 172336 & 172221 to Olton, crossing over for a slightly delayed 170509 & 170511 for the run back towards Birmingham Snow Hill, that just being enough to take the 170 over the ten miles line and saves having to look out for it in the future.  A quick march to New Street and onto a busy 220014 to take me to Oxford, where I had some spare time due to Jules telling me a required 802 was on the London bound, so a quick visit outside the station to waste some time.  I returned and ticked 802104 in my book as it rolled in, pretty much empty, with a trip to Reading passing the many colours of the festival.  An ice-cold 165135 took me to Basingstoke with 159005 taken back to Grateley, the end of a long but partly successful day.

Back at the start of the year I made a list of things I wanted to do, something which featured was to sample a 321 between Ipswich & Norwich, I was originally going to head this way in March time but decided against it (as the weather was a bit rubbish), my rough plan was put in my “ideas” folder, getting modified every now and again, so I decided to dust it off and head towards Norwich, in 90 minutes.

A gentle walk to Grateley station, and it was onto a busy 159106/159108 for the run to Waterloo, arriving a couple minutes ahead of schedule which is always a bonus as I walked towards the Waterloo & City line, jumping onto 65501/65502 as it rolled into the platform at Waterloo to start its journey to Bank, and across to the Central Line where I didn’t have long to wait before set 91097/92464/92070/91193 rolled in to take me the half mile to Liverpool Street, where I exited the station to get some supplies from Tesco.  My original idea of getting my ranger from the ticket office was ditched due to there being a massive queue (all the tourists!).

The 11:00 service to Norwich this morning had DVT 82132 leading the Mk3 coaches with 90007 providing the power, I got a decent table seat in the 2nd coach from the front (knowing I potentially had a tight connection at Norwich), not that heavily loaded for the non-stop run to Ipswich, losing a couple minutes around Witham due to a late running Braintree service (caused by a late running freight service), a quick stop at Ipswich then non-stop to Norwich.  I have a soft spot for this line as it gives some nice views, especially between Manningtree & Ipswich, and going through Colchester nonstop was a first for me.  This trip would probably be my farewell to the 90s on Greater Anglia, as it is unlikely I will do the full run to Norwich again.  The service reached Norwich in 92 minutes, arriving around 12:32 allowing me enough time to slowly walk over to platform 6 to try out my first 755, in the shape of 755410. 

Interior wise these things are great, good mix of table & airline seats which line up with the windows, plus the engines being in the middle meant no engine noise and quite quick to gain power, I can’t wait to sample one of these on the Cambridge line where it will get a chance for some fast running.  The train ran to Great Yarmouth, where I took a couple pictures before boarding the opposite end for the run back to Norwich, overall I am impressed (with the train and the route).  Another brief visit to Norwich as my eyes were on the 14:00 Liverpool Street service which since May has regularly thrown out 321s to cover for the set lost for the Express services.  Today was no different with refurbished 321321 & 321323 on intercity duties, sadly being refurbished meant the windows were sealed so no epic motor noise.

I took a seat in the motor coach (where else?) of 321321 for the fast run towards Ipswich, my first decent fast run on a 321 for ages, certainly felt different calling at Diss on something other than a Mk3 coach, but another aim for the day was ticked off, I know 321s are not suitable for intercity services due to the limited first class, 3+2 seating with no tables but still a good laugh.  At Ipswich I hung around to get a shock when 156416 rolled in on a Felixstowe service, it wasn’t the more usual 153.  A trip to Felixstowe was in order as it’s been a few years since I did this branch, forgetting how fast the unit gets after Derby Road, a nice run with the new freight loop around Trimley.  A quick picture of the unit at Felixstowe before I changed ends for the run back out towards Westerfield.

Westerfield is a strange station, it is on the line towards Lowestoft, but hardly any services to/from Lowestoft call, other than on Sundays.  I timed my visit well to use one of the few Lowestoft bound services which call in order for a random platform score, noticing the “formed of 1 carriage” popping up on the PIS, as 153335 rolled in.  As expected it was quite busy, but I managed to get a seat after asking a gentleman to move his bag, originally I was going to stay on to Saxmundham but I failed to notice this service sits at Woodbridge for 10 minutes (the off-pattern departure is due to an old freight path to Sizewell), and with the next southbound service running 10 minutes I decided to change my plan and bailed at Woodbridge, with 170202 eventually rolling in.  On a warm day the AC was very much welcomed, and it was back to Ipswich, putting myself ahead of my rough plan.

For a time wasting move, I jumped on DVT 82114 leading 90009 for the run to Stowmarket, returning to Ipswich on 90008 (with DVT 82136 on the other end), and popped out of the station for a brief walk before the booked Norwich bound 321s (17:03 or so from Liverpool Street), getting lucky with 321320 leading low mileage 321303 & 321326 for the run to Stowmarket, followed a few minutes later with DVT 82105 leading low mileage 90002 for the run to Diss.  Back to Ipswich on 90013 (DVT 82152 on the rear), where my next aim was about to be ticked off, with a pair of 317s on the next Ipswich – London stopper.  My luck was in as it was 317666 & 317514, as I took a seat in the 2+2 seated 317/6 (in the motor coach), I was expecting it to be a pair of 3+2 seated units which are not so nice inside.

The run to Stratford was delayed by a late running freight service being given the route from Ipswich, but it was a spirited run from the driver as he attempted to regain some of the lost time, certainly felt different having 317s on this route, again I can’t remember the last time I had a decent run on a 317, certainly where it could get up to speed.  I bailed at Stratford and made my way across to the Jubilee line with 96076 & 96015 taken to Waterloo, with one eye on the clock (as this plan was originally made when the 22:20 service called at Grateley).  I managed to get some dinner before jumping on a busy 159106 on the 21:50 service to take me back to Grateley, the end of a busy but successful day.
